Inventory financing funds the purchase of stock or parts ahead of sale and is usually secured by that inventory. Ivybend Advances, a small-business funding broker in Missoula, MT, explains how partners value stock and file liens, and routes requests to lending partners, which make the credit decision and set rates and terms.

How stock-backed funding works
A partner puts up money against stock the business is buying or already has on its shelves. Because goods lose value if they sit, partners usually lend only a portion of what the stock is worth and care a great deal about how fast it sells. Repayment may follow a fixed schedule, or be tied to the sale of the financed goods, depending on the structure.
How to finance inventory is less about the product name and more about three facts: what the goods are, how long they take to sell, and what the business earns on them once they do.
The UCC filing behind most stock-backed deals
Most inventory financing is secured, and the partner records its claim with a UCC financing statement. That filing tells other creditors the inventory is already pledged. It matters later: a second partner considering a line of credit may see the existing lien and decline, or ask for it to be released first. Before you sign, ask exactly what the filing covers: only the financed goods, all inventory, or every business asset.
Shops and distributors in Missoula County, MT
Missoula County had 543 retail employer establishments and 184 wholesale employer establishments in 2023 (CBP 2023). The two behave differently. Retail employers were split: 38.1 percent had fewer than five employees. Wholesale employers ran 43.5 percent under five. Retail also counted 846 businesses without payroll in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics 2024), from market stalls to online sellers.
Retail stock tends to be many small items with a broad mix of turnover speeds. Wholesale orders are bigger and tied to specific customers, which can make the repayment source easier to show. Both feed into how a partner values the goods.

Inventory financing in practice
- A one-time bulk buy at a supplier discount, repaid as the goods sell over the following months.
- A wholesale order for a named customer, where the purchase order shows how repayment arrives.
- Parts and materials a contractor or repair business must hold to take on work.
- A new product line, where the partner may ask for supplier terms and early sales evidence.
Know your turnover before the call
The number partners care about most is how fast stock turns into cash. Work it out from your own records: cost of goods sold for the year divided by average inventory on hand gives turns per year, and 365 divided by that gives days to sell. A shop that turns stock every 60 days is a different credit from one that holds it for 200.
Break it down by product line if you can. A store that sells fast-moving basics and slow-moving specialty items should fund the two differently, and a partner will ask which part of the shelf the money is for.
Inventory financing for a new business
An inventory loan for a new business is harder to arrange than one for a shop with a few years of sales records, because the partner has no history showing how fast the stock turns. Supplier invoices, purchase orders from committed customers and a realistic sales plan help, but the decision rests with the partner. Some new owners start with supplier credit terms instead and add inventory financing once a sales record exists.
Stock-backed funding or a revolving line?
A business line of credit can pay for stock too, and it is more flexible: one limit covers inventory, wages and repairs. Inventory financing is narrower, but because the goods back it, it can sometimes reach businesses a general line would not. Many retailers use a line for routine reorders and inventory financing for a large one-time buy.
The six-shape comparison sets both beside the other options, and the broker process explains what we ask before routing the request.
