This construction equipment loan calculator estimates the monthly payment and total cost, including the down payment, of financing a machine from its price, down payment, interest rate and term. Ivybend Advances, a small-business funding broker in Missoula, MT, offers it to Missoula County contractors as arithmetic only; it is not an offer or a prediction of terms.
What each box means
- Equipment price: the amount on the quote, before your down payment.
- Down payment: cash you put in up front. Leave it at zero if there is none.
- Interest rate: the annual rate you were quoted or want to test. The calculator shows no rates of its own.
- Term: how many monthly payments the deal runs.
The result is the monthly payment on the financed amount (price minus down payment) and the total cost: every payment added up, plus the down payment.
Checking the math by hand
Set the rate to zero and the monthly payment is simply the financed amount divided by the number of months. Any rate above zero raises the payment, and the gap between total cost and price is the interest. If the calculator's answer ever looks odd, that zero-rate check shows whether the inputs went in correctly.
Costs this calculator ignores
- Sales tax, delivery, setup and attachments not in the price
- Documentation or origination fees a partner may charge
- Insurance the partner requires on the machine
- Lease structures: residual values, buyout options and end-of-term returns
- Weekly or skip-month payment schedules; it computes monthly payments only
Lease comparisons and payment schedules other than monthly have to be worked by hand or asked of the partner. Equipment financing explains how leases differ from loans.
Comparing new and used quotes
Run each quote separately, using the price and the rate offered for that machine. A used machine may cost less but come with a shorter term, which raises the monthly payment. Compare the total cost and the payment against what the machine will earn, not the sticker price alone.
Why Missoula County, MT contractors run these numbers
Missoula County had 612 construction employers in 2023, 67.0 percent of them with fewer than five employees, and 1,285 construction businesses without payroll in 2024 (Census CBP and Nonemployer Statistics). For a crew that size, one machine payment is a large fixed cost. Contractor financing covers the rest of a contractor's funding picture.
Using the result
A result is a starting point for a conversation, not a quote. The partner sets the actual rate, term and down payment. If the purchase is a mix of equipment, tools and software, a term loan may suit better. Other tools and guides are on the guide library.
